Reflection – Writing the Controlling Idea/Organizing and Developing Support - Sec. 4 - April 14

Visit this URL: http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/onlineguide/chapter2-10.cfm Now that you are well familiar with a controlling idea/organizing and developing support, discuss a topic sentence that would be good to explore for the Spring Break.

Example: Yesterday, I had an unusual fiesta experience at the Field House.

Please note that the above topic sentence enables the audience to inquire what kind of experience you've had and why it was unusual.

In addition, discuss your thoughts on today's class activities.

  1. Today's activity allowed us the explore the writing process analysis. One of our activities was to research how to change the oil in a car which reminded me of an incident that happened over spring break. Over spring break my car was giving me problems on my way to work which resulted in it dying out on me. Since I do not know much about cars, I was unable to help myself and had to call for help. This showed me that I needed to educate myself about my car. Experiencing this incident made me want to have a better knowledge of cars just in case I have another problem in the future.

    1. That's a tragic experience and I hope it doesn't happen to you again. Like you, I don't know anything that much about cars either and I had experienced a car trouble while I'm on the road as well. I was driving in cross island and I had a tire blow out. I panicked since I didn't know what to do, so I had to call someone for help. After that incident I asked my dad how to change tires so if ever something like that happens again, I know what to do.

  2. It is always great to have a controlling idea and developing support because it help writer organize their writing clearly and precisely. Example: Today, I had an great day at Dr. Rivera class learn a new lesson a day. The stronger your idea is makes your writing and reader understand your essay clearly. It is also great if your majoring as a English teacher or just love writing and poetry because you gain a lot of experience through making your support creative and attractive on reader and audience alike. I want to be a awesome writer and so as my colleagues.

  6. On December 22, 2011 through January 05, 2012, I had the most amazing vacation in the Philippines.
In addition to today's activities we have done a lot of exercises regarding process analysis. In process analysis there are two types which are directive and informative. We also read the writing process worksheet about doing a flame hair tattoo and done the essay brain stretchers.

    1. Between the two types of process analysis, I prefer the directive better. The flame hair tattoo was a great and fun reading. I liked how it caught my attention and kept me interested as we read on. The part that interested me the most is the process of how to do it. It was a long and tedious process, yet worth it in the end.

  7. Today's activity was very informative. While we were learning the different types of process analysis we were also learning new things such as changing the car oil and planting a new lawn, things we expect to learn outside of a classroom instead. Figuring out the importance of following steps in doing something was somehow related to my spring break. My spring break was very tedious one. I spent long hours inside an office filing and organizing papers.

    1. I agree that today's class activities were informative. I like that we had those class exercises which taught us how to do things. My favorite one was how do we change our car's oil because it could be quite handy when we're on the road. That's a very productive way of spending your spring break. Most of my spring break were spent at home doing homework and hanging out with friends.

Today's activities were fun and engaging. The exercises in the newer chapters seem to get more challenging as we dive deeper into the textbook. We also learned how important it is to obtain information before writing on an objective topic. Overall, the class was good and I hope to be challenged more in the future.

  10. Topic Sentence: During spring break, my friends and I went on a trip around the island. Today's activity was interesting and very informative. After our class discussion and a few activities about process analysis, I realized how important it is in writing. It creates a brief, yet effective guideline of how ideas in your essay should be sequenced properly. Also, it helps keep the writer keep on track of what to write next.

    1. This is a really great insight! I think most writers forget about process analysis, but it is always good to take note of it. I hope we never forget about these tips and processes that we learned in class.

  11. A good Spring Break topic for me would be: My day as my cousin's chauffeur. The oil change activity taught me that following the right steps in correct sequence is very important, especially in writing.

    1. Good topic! I bet that being a chauffeur for your cousin is bound to be an interesting experience. And I think all the processes and tips that we learn from class are important to take note of to be able to improve our writing skills.

  12. Topic Sentence: I had a very sad spring break with the death of my mother.
Although I vaguely remember this topic, I remember that our topic sentence should be both vague enough and specific enough to talk about. The topic sentence should be vague enough so that we could expound more on the topic. However, it also should be specific enough so that we would focus only in one specific aspect of your topic.
