Reflection - Feb. 3 - Sec. 5

Share your thoughts regarding today's activities. (Re: Writing Process: Stage One, Exploring/Experimenting/Gathering Information)

55 comments:

  1. My thoughts about the writing process is that writing is like reading. If you do not understand about what you read, you go back and read it again. The same goes for writing. If you are writing and your essay is too broad you might want to go back and narrow your writing. For free writing, you write as much information you can gather, don't stop. After you have finished, you can go back and underline or circle key words or even add notes on the side so that the free writing continues to grow.

    1. I agree. I think that would be one of the difficulties of writing, trying to choose whether to narrow down your subject or not. That's also the good thing about drafts, right? If you read what you wrote and you don't like it, you can always go back and fix it.

    2. I feel the same way as I read and write my essays. There has been times that I have to go back and reedit my paper because it's too wordy or unclear.

      Delete
    3. I agree with both of you primarily because based on personal experience I tend to over write and that can bore a reader. I agree that the best thing about drafts is to let you go back and revise your writing and keeping the main points and rid off excess details.

  2. Today's activity gave me new and helpful information on the writing process. The most important thing I learned was freewriting because it could make writing easier by underling and annotating important words from the flow of our thoughts. Even though the freewriting is in proper order, many points could be brought out from it. It helps writers recognize very important details to focus and expand on.

    1. I completely agree. Freewriting makes the writing process much easier to brainstorm all of our ideas. We will have a lot of topics to talk about in our Final Draft after!

    2. I agree. We have to go over what we wrote for free-writing. When we do, we pick out the main ideas and thoughts. It's like taking notes on what you've written.

    3. Annotating really helps you to see what topic you are searching for while free-writing. I'm looking forward to more free-writing exercises to help improve our writing skills!

    4. I agree. Underlining and annotating helps the writing continue to grow. Free writing helps you to write as much as you can and not stop. It is a good practice to help you write essays.

    5. definitely agree. Free writing for me is not really new as I'm sure it goes for the rest of us. At some point, we all have done free writing in our own way, we might have not realized it. However, annotations was actually something new I picked on. It really helped me focus on the topic and what I should write about.

  3. In today's class, we were given the opportunity to free write our thoughts on the the topics given. I chose the topic on social media and took a different approach than others in my class. I found that this helped me with what I should write and how I should approach my topic. Underlining important words/ phrases helped gather important information. Being able to write freely was out of the ordinary but very beneficial for the writing process. Whatever pops into your mind would eventually end up on my paper.

    1. I agree, underlining important words and phrases does gather up all the important information that has been given. Not only that, with that information you are able to determine the important ideas and points of that essay.

    2. I agree with Mia, everything she said about the benefits of being able to freely write is the key to a better writer.

    3. I agree. Free writing and underlining does help with essays. This is one of the things that I never thought that it would be beneficial, but it does help plenty.

    4. I agree. Free writing really lets you jot down all your ideas down and later on you can focus and choose which ones to use. It really helps you condense your writing down keeping the main points.

  4. My thoughts on today's activities is that it went by pretty fast. Our active reading part of class took up about half class time. When we did peer review it was pretty stressful because my partners paper was confusing me. I would definitely hate being an English teacher and reading essays.

    1. Was it helpful tho? did you learn something from that active reading?

      Delete
    2. Well, time did fly by really fast. That is the thing i despise the most especially when one works hard. Hopefully, you learn or review the activities.

      Delete
    3. Yes. The time really flew by quick. I agree it that our active reading did took up most of it. But I did learn a few new things such as annotations and how it can help you concentrate on your topic and how to write it in the best possible way for the readers.

  5. From the freewriting, I could learn what problems I have. I had some grammar errors, and learn to write sentences better. Also, today's activity was meaningful to me. Even if I did not read any passages and paragraphs, I listened others carefully. I sometimes had problems to read some words, so I focused on others who read a textbook. From all about me essay, I could learn about my partner. I also could realize my grammar issues. Today was meaningful to me.

  6. Today's activities were enjoyable and new as to how to improve on my writing. Today we learned about free-writing in which you write off the top of your head. With this I learned that in freewriting we are supposed to let our mind flow and write down what comes to mind. Another activity that we had today we also had our peer review and although I didn't do mine or have my essay looked over, I was able to asses that we it is good to have others look over my writing in order to improve on the mistakes I've made in my essay and edit them to make my essay more coherent.

    1. I agree with this because thanks to today's activities I did learn how to improve on my writing and how it is better to have my essay reviewed in order for it to be improved upon.

  7. Hello fellow classmates, Today we had to exchange our All About Me essay draft with a partner during Peer Review. It was a great experience because it allowed us to strengthen our essays while we strengthened our bond as classmates. We learned a lot about how I could fix up my essay to make it the best it could be. It's really awesome to have awesome classmates to help me with my EN 100 struggles. Thank you all for a great day! :)

    1. I agree with the bonding as classmates statement. Today was a comfortable day to interact with our fellow classmates and kind of get to know each other a little bit better. I appriciate the constructive critisism on my essays so I can improve the quality of it.

    2. I agree that this experience can strengthen our essays. Their opinions helped me think of a better way I can make my essay more interesting and story like.

    3. I agree. Exchanging our essays, since they were about our classmates, strengthened our bonds. I found out things that I didn't know about other people. It could have been a bonding exercise in disguise.

    4. I agree with Deion about having a bond with our peers in writing. One of the many aspects of life is to connect with one another and form a special bond that will grow and flourish our endeavors. Working together strengthens and motivates work which is important in creating things such as writing, assignments, and making goals happen.

  8. Im new to the freewriting method. I've never used this style of writing before but I do see it's advantages with the flow of thought by making sure all ideas are picked out of our minds and placed on the paper. I did not have a paper for a peer review but I get the concept of it. It helps with trying to revise and share our ideas on our peers essays so we may better understand both aspects of essays. It will only help our make the quality of our future essays better.

    1. Its great that you get the concept of peer review even without a paper to review! I agree that peer review only makes our essays stronger!

    2. Sharing ideas really helps the writer put more effort to make the reader understand the writer's point of view. It helps create a image for the reader.

  9. My thoughts regarding today's activities is that it was very helpful and helped me more on my writing skills. Also showed me how to free write more better. What i think about the peer editing part was kind of hard for me because I am not so sure of how my own essay was. If it was that effective and accurate more than the essay i am pure editing my self. Overall so far the lessons are effective and helping me more step by step getting by this class.

    1. I understand what your saying. I feel the same way about editing our peers essays because Im not sure on how exactly to correct someones essay. But what I would do is just try to make sure the structure of the essay is organized. I try to make sure the intro is strong and immediately grabs my attention. The body must support the thesis and the conclusion strongly summarizes the entire essay.

    2. I agree. My writing skills aren't quite good but as we continue to do these kinds of activities it will definitely improve. Especially learning about free writing it will help us especially in essays as we continue more into this semester. As for peer reviews I am not quite great at that as well. It is a great idea that we do these more often so that it will improve our writing. We can help each others writing skills throughout the peer reviews.

  10. Today was pretty interesting. I had an interview with my partner about our drafts. I learned a lot from his own draft. He made a very good introduction, structure, a good background about his life, and ended his essay nicely. I liked how he corrected me on my draft and how to make it more like a story. He showed me a better way on how to do a better presentation with my work.

    2. That's good. I feel as if we all could really help one another out. Because all our essays have to be peer reviewed, I think we'll all be able to really grow together as an English class.

    1. I agree. I think reading more about the writing process we will gain more understanding about writing an essay. Like I said, writing is like reading. If you do not understand about what you have read, you go back and read it again.Same goes for writing. If its too broad, go back and narrow your topic. This will best help in writing essays.

    2. I agree. During the peer edit, it was not only helpful for my partner but it benefited me. Looking through his paper helped me realise what to fix on my own paper and that was what I thought was important during the process.

  12. Today's activity has been a wonderful experience. Surprisingly, there is not much new lessons today. However, it was a good review for the whole class hour. Even though most of the class learned free writing, it has been a refreshing to me. I have not done free writing for a while. Aside from free writing, I get to peer review with my classmate. From her essay to my essay, I learned plenty about how to review and edit an essay grammatically and clearly. Overall, today's class time has been accomplished fluently.

  13. Today, i enjoyed in class. it was very interesting. We all read the book and the instruction did lecture a little bit about it. we also pass out the our essays all about me that we could get a peer review on it. It was awesome and i got to learn something new.

    1. I agree. I believe free writing was fairly new to most of the class. Its sort of an odd way to ensure that you leave no chain of thought in your head. But at least you'll know that you won't leave any important details out of your essay.

  14. I enjoyed today's activities because it showed me another way to process my thoughts on a topic I have to write about. I always thought that, for pre-writing, there were only listing your ideas and then going into writing your essay. I had no idea about freewriting. I like being able to write whatever comes out of my mind without worrying about the basic grammar rules. For freewriting, even if my thoughts stop for a second and I write,"blah, blah, blah," it still helps my thought process to get back on track. Then, for the underling and annotating, it makes it easier to pick what are the main ideas or sub-topics I want to talk about when I start writing my draft.

    1. I agree. Free writing is a subject in which isn't restricted by any grammatically bounded by any borders. In a way it feels like these are our thoughts as if they were just taken straight out of our minds. It gives our writings that fresh feel and with that makes our ideas seem more genuine. After all the free writing is done then you move on to the editing in which you can edit your ideas so that way they are that much more easier to be understood.

    2. Definitely on point, I also feel the same way about freewriting. It gives us the scope of our main points that need to be addressed easily.

    3. I agree. I had no idea about free writing as well. It is a great practice to just gather all your thoughts and write it down without stopping. Like what you said, even just writing "blah, blah, blah ," it still does help you get back on track if you ever stop the process of you writing down your thoughts. Also, for underlining and annotating it really does make it easier for the readers to get the main point. It also helps the writing continue to grow.

  15. I enjoyed the days class activity. It felt a little more oriented and less tension for me. I really enjoyed the peer review. I learned a lot about my classmate through her writing. I really liked how i felt a connection with her journey on achieving her dream, most especially how much family means to her and she let it known all through her paper. My writing will surely be better developed than before todays lesson.Thank you all for a comfortable and great learning environment today and to a great read on my peers essay today.

  16. I enjoyed today's lesson . I thought that the day went by as usual with our thinking assessment of a picture and our blog entries, and I also learned much about the writing processes. Free writing was a very new experience for me, however, it was because of my unfamiliarity that I enjoyed it a lot. I am usually a writer that prefers quality over quantity, so I won't write an idea or a string of ideas without first thinking how I could format them methodically. The peer review was another new experience for me as well seeing as I've never actually reviewed anyone's paper , other than my own, in all the years I've had of schooling prior. All in all, like most days, I enjoyed today's lesson from beginning to end.

    1. I felt the same way with the day going by as usual. I am glad that you did enjoy free writing because it is something over-looked my most students and they do not apply it as much as they should. Overall, it is a fun class from start to finish.

  17. Today's class was actually somewhat refreshing. Although, I would have loved to stay home and watch the superbowl, today's topic was a little worth missing the game. What I walked away with from today's lesson were free writing and annotations. Personally, I never really have used free writing before. I usually skip all these process and do the final paper. However, I see how free writing can really helps a writer jots down all his or her ideas before moving onto another draft and another until you eliminate and revise what information you want to keep and what to take out.
