Today's activities included understanding how people felt about their identities in their stories. Lame Deer felt that society has lot its touch with nature and resented that. The Chinese girl was ecstatic to embrace the American culture but in the process also lost touch with her Chinese heritage. These are both sad realizations of what culture and society is becoming.
ReplyDeleteGood point, Christopher. I like how you realized that! I didn't even think about how they both relate to what society and culture in the modern day have come to. Those were both great stories we read today, giving us something to think about.

DeleteI feel your concern about people losing touch with their heritage and culture Christopher. I believe that people should embrace their origins, yet never to close the door of opportunity for change. By this I mean that we should accept and welcome other cultural practices as well in order to enrich our knowledge and experiences, but continue to execute ours on the process so we wouldn't forget them.
DeleteThat is true! It is important to get in touch with your roots and where you are from.
DeleteTrue, culture is a huge part of who we are but sometimes society has a way of making us think that we're better off, nevertheless we must remember to keep in touch of our culture because with out I don't think we'll feel complete in knowing who we really are.
DeleteIn class, I learn about descriptive essay, reaction essay, and professional essay etc. I also did a reflective brainstorming for the picture.

I enjoyed today's activity because we were able to get the help we needed in order to sign up for my ready lab. I also enjoy meeting in the computer lab because the chairs are more comfortable than the chairs in the classroom. I also enjoy reading out loud in the class because it helps students come out of their shell and be apart of class discussion. Reading out loud also helps me remember the names of my classmates. Overall, today's class meeting was productive.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Rachel. Today's my reading lab presentation was very informative. Reading out loud in class really does help us to participate more in class and learn each others names as well. Good point! A very productive and informative day it was.
DeleteI agree that the my reading lab presentation is very helpful to make us understand how the system works and how this tool could help us improve our ways as a reader and writer as well. Reading out loud in class and taking turns is a great approach in making us a little comfortable with each other in the mean of communication through reading paragraphs and phrases.
DeleteThat slide show about the reading lab was really helpful. I agree that the chairs in the computer lab are much more comfortable than those in the classroom. I'm gonna miss them when we go back. Also saying our names out loud does help us to get familiar with our classmate's names.
DeleteI agree with you Rachel, today's activity was very helpful in informing us how to use MyReadingLab because it's important to us in finding out how we can improve as better writers as well as readers.
DeleteToday's activities were pretty bread and butter. They were basic college introductory activities with not much variation. Giving everyone an equal opportunity to read is a great concept, but I would love if some people would read louder! That's about it I think. ..
ReplyDeleteI believe the introductory phase really helps build foundation for future classes. In today's class, we learned some basic knowledge on MLA and citing, which will be helpful on all four of our upcoming essays. I agree people should read louder, however, it was difficult due to us being in the computer lab. We weren't facing each other as we do in class so it was harder to hear each other. I do respect your opinion though.
DeleteI found today's activities helpful for my future essays. I now know more about how to cite and what mindset to lock in when reading certain essays. In order to understand readings, we must know how quote from original reading in our essay. Along with explanations on why we agree or disagree with the original author we are quoting. Descriptive essay review also helped me to understand what is expected on this essay. It also gave me ideas and topics to write about.
ReplyDeleteToday's class lecture and activity is indeed very beneficial for improving our writings in the future Alina. I agree with the idea of quoting the original text or the author to give that legit writer a credit for his or her work and also to avoid plagiarism that could cause consequences in our writings.
DeleteToday's activities included the orientation of my reading lab software, the readings of "Hearing of the air guitar" (96), and "the struggles of being an All American Girl' (97). They are basically stories of different cultures and how they influence other people.
ReplyDeleteLike the previous English class, we had to read aloud excerpts from the Paragraphs and Essays book. We also learned what we should do about the myreadinglab and basic citation rules. All-in-all, today was a pretty ordinary English class, but it was also an informative introduction to start things up for this class.
ReplyDeleteI agree Theia that these topics has bee discussed in previous English classes, but I think that it's a good start for the semester in order to refresh our memories as well as those who forgot some quite important information that is needed to pass and make this course less challenging.
DeleteI thought the activity today was great! I was able to learn more about descriptive essays, citing papers, and MLA. I was able to reflect on the readings and been able to see how it relates to me. Overall, the today's activities and readings were great!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Deann. The activity today was very helpful. I learned more about MLA and citing papers which are required knowledge for our upcoming essays. It is one of the many subjects I needed help on and now I understand more about.

ReplyDeleteWhat I found to be the most interesting today was the sample text of descriptive writing titled, "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" by Elizabeth Wong. I understood how the author felt towards the two cultures because like her I sometimes deny my own culture (Chuukese) and prefer the western culture. The conflict of deciding which culture to follow starts by criticisms from others, my observations, and the advantages/disadvantages of each. As we continued to read aloud I couldn't help but smile because the author’s attitudes and thoughts towards her two cultures were quite similar to mine. Overall I enjoyed today’s activity and look forward to reading different kinds of essays as well as topics in this class.
ReplyDelete"The Struggle to be an All-American Girl is indeed a very interesting piece of writing Honeina. It tells us a story of one's struggle to be stuck between a clash of cultures and changes that sorrounds us which happens in our everyday lives.
DeleteToday's overall class activities are helpful and very informative especially the presentation about the reading lab. It helped greatly in making us students understand the processes, goals and the purpose of the my reading lab which is to aid our learning and guide us throughout the course. Also, the brain stretcher is a fun activity. It encourages us to think fast and pushes us to develop our skills in order to improve our writing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on that. It will definitely help us in our writing.
DeleteI agree with you on the brain stretcher being a fun activity. It does make us think fast and help us recall and relate different topics to the ones shown in the pictures. What I love about it in the end is sharing what we have with the class, it pushes us to be better speakers as well as sharing our ideas to others.
DeleteI thought that today's activity was a good learning experience. I learned more about the MLA format which is a writing style that I see myself using for the rest of my life in writing professionally. The example essays were interesting. The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl by Elizabeth Wong made me think more about how much I value my own cultural identity and that I can embrace my culture while adopting another.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I also see myself repeatedly using the MLA format because from what I've seen plagiarism is not taken lightly. For every syllabus that has been handed out work citation is expected in UOG.
DeleteToday's activities were a good learning experience and very informative. Learning more about writing, such as MLA format, could help me in the near future for writing essays or papers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on that. It is very helpful to know about all these writing strategies. It helps us to improve our writing skills
DeleteThe activities and the things we talked about were really good. The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl helped me realize and contemplate on my own culture. It also helped me get over my fear of getting used to another culture and doing new things. I also enjoyed the brain stretcher.
ReplyDeleteToday's activity was very helpful. Reading all the examples in the book gave me ideas on how to write a perfect paper. All the sharing and was also very helpful because I learn many things from hearing all those wonderful ideas by my classmate. Today's class was awesome.
ReplyDeleteToday's reading was very helpful. It refreshed my memory on MLA format, which I know I'll be using later for professional essays. It also refreshed my memory on citing and everything else I needed to know to write a perfect paper.
