  3. A descriptive essay is a piece of writing in which description is emphasized through the use of sensory details in order to establish a much clearer and realistic picture of a place, object, or an event through the use of words.
If I were to choose a topic from the given categories, i would choose the idea of a rainy day, because it's my favourite weather. Not only it is an interesting topic, it also creates a nice atmosphere with its cold, showers and zephyrs. Above all, rainy days are also times where we could relax, which gives us time to look back to our past and see ourselves, what mistakes we made, what accomplishments we achieved, and how these made us the way we are.

    1. I agree with you on your understanding of a descriptive essay. I enjoy writing descriptive essays because it helps me to relate and express my feelings in the essay. And I also enjoy rainy days for the most part. Rainy days help me to relax and also helps me relieve stress and get much needed rest. You are right, rainy days also help us think about our lives and where we are now and realize how much we've accomplished and how much we've been through.

    2. In an essay overall, includes expository, descriptive, narrative and persuasive. With descriptive writing it may involve a person, place, experience and what we can remember. Creating an image of what the story is possibly describing. Right?

    3. Writing a descriptive essay does help establish a clearer and realistic picture. Great definition of a descriptive essay. I think that a rainy day would make a good topic. Rainy days makes you want to relax, and drink some hot chocolate or coffee. It also gives us the chance to reflect back on our lives.

    4. I agree with you on your explanation of a descriptive essay. Your idea of a rainy day is well described through your post and I could honestly say I enjoy rainy days as much as you do. Similarly it also the time I have to contemplate on many of the choices that I have chosen or taken.

    5. I agree that in a descriptive essay, your main goal is to establish a clear and realistic picture of a certain place, object, or an event. Sunny days are good if you want to do something productive, but rainy days are really the best whenever you just want to contemplate about life.

    6. I agree, the strongest advice given to many students from teachers when writing a descriptive essay, "appeal to the senses". The main point of many descriptive essays are to make use of all senses so that the readers or audience will be able to have a full experience of what the writer went through. As for your topic, it's very true what you've said, rainy days are times when I relax and think about the many things that I've done so far, the good and bad. It's the cold, gloomy atmosphere that pushes me to think.

  4. A descriptive essay is a writing that describes and emphasizes a topic by describing sensory details. This type of writing is used to help describe what is being discussed or written about in the essay. This form of writing helps the reader get a better picture of what is happening and be able to relate to the topic. If I were to chose a topic, I would chose how it is to start at a new school or new job. I would chose this because I can relate easily to it and I have experienced it numerous times. It's interesting because most of us will go through this experience at least once in our lives and it's nice to know that others feel the same way you did at the time. Since I have gone through this event more than once, I am able to expand my ideas on it and describe it in many details.

    1. The reason for your choice of topic is very true. We've all experienced our first day of school and for me it has always been a conflicting day, I don't know whether I'm excited, nervous, or anxious. The first days of school will always be something we remember even as we grow old which makes it great for a descriptive essay.

    2. I like your comment Honeina, Experience from that past relates to who we are, how we think and make final choices. Conflicting because we do not know what to expect. Descriptive essays are interesting. It also creates an imaginary picture for the readers.

    3. I agree that the use of sensory details definitely makes up most of a descriptive essay. It creates pictures in the reader's mind in order to imagine your point of view. That's a good choice for your topic! You'll be able to show us different points of views that most of us don't know about.

    4. I can definitely relate to your topic. I have as well experienced it a number of times. I agree that most of us will eventually go through it, but will also get through it.

  5. A descriptive essay is basically an essay describing an object, person, place, etc. This particular genre helps students in their artistic freedom, enables them to as if paint a vivid and moving in the mind of their readers. For instance if I were to write a descriptive essay on a delicious slice of pizza, I will describe what type of pizza it was, how hot it was, how delicious it, describe the time and place I was in, the emotions I felt while eating that slice of pizza, and my thoughts. I have to describe the experience basically along with the pizza to the readers.

Painting pictures in the reader's mind sounds like the perfect example for a descriptive essay. Good subject! I love pizza. It'll be great to envision your description while I create the image in my mind. Good supporting detail ideas for the essay as well!

    3. I agree with you. Descriptive essays are best whenever you want to express yourself artistically, even if the topic is as fun and appetizing as pizza. I think you are on your way to writing a very effective descriptive essay, as you already know what you'll include in your essay.

    4. I like your idea that a descriptive essay gives a writer the freedom to be an artist. Compared to the other types of writing, description is easier and more popular because unlike the others, writers are given more liberty and opportunity to express themselves. It allows them to explore the depths of their mind with the use of a more fun and interesting approach in writing, which is through imagery.

    5. I could not agree more. It does give writers an artistic side of writing. Descriptive essays will give readers something to look forward to. I thought your topic was funny but interesting. It gave me a good chuckle and also I look forward on your thoughts on that good slice of pizza.

    6. I love how you say it gives student an artistic freedom because many times, I'm sure we're all guilty of this, we don't see writing as a freedom or art. We don't see it as a way of expressing ourselves like how an artist would use a technique or different ways of shading to show how he feels, lively or gloomy. A descriptive essay does enable a student to be free and creative.

    7. I love your topic! I am a VERY huge fan of pizza! Especially the one back at home. It is a topic I'll enjoying reading and writing about!

  7. A descriptive essay gives you the chance to express all the details you wouldn't normally express in a normal essay. I like writing this way because you make the reader understand and feel all that you did towards that subject. It lets the reader use their imagination. On the other hand, this may lead to too many thoughts being clustered onto the paper.
If I could, I wanted to write about my experience at basic training. I think this is something I would be able to explain this very well because of my first hand experience. It also meant very much to me to accomplish such task.

    3. Your description of a descriptive essay is very true and is helpful to someone who would be learning about it for the first time. Your job experience is also very interesting and is a good topic to write about. Although I have never been to basic training, I am interested in hearing about how your experience was and how it made you feel. We all have our different perspectives but it is good to hear the perspective of a fellow classmate.

  8. A descriptive essay is a form of writing wherein the writer describes a person, place or thing and in doing so, will attempt to paint a picture of the topic to the reader. The goal of the writer is to describe the object well so that the reader will be able to envision or feel the what the writer experienced or is trying to convey.
In choosing a topic to write about I would choose a happy moment because it is usually the time when we take in everything and everyone. When we're happy we're most aware of our surroundings and even what goes on inside of us such as our feelings, thoughts, and emotions. It is during our happiest moments when we remember every little detail from what we did before to who was there, this would be the best topic to write a descriptive essay on.

    3. I agree that a great descriptive essay is one that the readers can perfectly envision. I really love your topic, and it is true that when you're happy, you start to be aware of your surroundings. It reminds me of some books that I've read that even described the minute details of the protagonist's surroundings (i.e. the rustling of leaves, the droplets of rain, etc)

  9. In my own words, a descriptive essay is a way of writing that allows the author to describe a subject matter and get creative with their writing. You have freedom when you write this type of way, thus allowing the reader to see an image of what you wrote about. It is important to leave the reader with a vivid picture of what you are trying to depict through words. The topic that I would like to write about would be about a day at the beach. There are so many things you can enjoy at a beach, especially the sun and Guam's waters. You can also get very descriptive and leave the reader with a clear picture of what a day at the beach is like in Guam.

  10. A descriptive essay is a type of essay in which you would vividly describe a situation or experience. To effectively write this type of essay, the writer must use the five senses in describing each event. If done correctly, the reader will have a proper grasp or picture of what the writer is trying to convey or tell. Among the other types of essays, this can be a creative outlet as it gives the writer the freedom to talk about anything under the sun.

    1. If I were to choose a topic among the ones listed in the handout, I would have to pick the one about my home town. I picked this topic because I believe that I could write a lot of things about this because where I live now is different from my home town. City life and island life are two totally different environments. On one hand you have tall skyscrapers and overcrowded cities. And on the other, windy and sandy beaches. I think if you could relate greatly to a certain topic, you would have a better chance of writing a coherent and colorful descriptive essays.

  12. A descriptive essay is an essay that uses much more details to explain a person, place, or thing. It's main aim is to show clear images of what you're writing about. Also, to make the readers imagine, or feel what the writer has experienced. I find descriptive essays very interesting and entertaining. If I was to choose a topic to write about it would be about falling in love. I don't actually mean falling in with a person, I mean falling in with dancing, cultural dancing in particular. I've danced for 9 years and learned a lot about it. I'm sure that I would be able to paint a very detailed picture of this topic because I'm familiar with it.
