Reflection - Test #1 - Sec. 4 - March 5

Discuss your thoughts on taking Test #1. Were you prepared for it? If so, what strategies did you use as part of your preparation? If you were not prepared for it, what will you do next time to ensure that you do well on the test? In addition, discuss your thoughts of today's activities.

  1. In class today, we discussed our test #1 which was a descriptive essay. I felt well prepared for class because I had worked on the essay days prior to the due date and I had read and practiced the steps of the writing process. I enjoyed today's activity because it allowed me to share my thesis and share what I had learned from writing the essay. It was also nice to hear what my classmates had written about and their ideas on what they learned from this test. It is always good to hear the feedback of my classmates and relate it to my own feedback. Overall this test has given me a better knowledge of the writing process and how it comes in handy when writing an essay the proper way.

    2. Great point! I felt well prepared as well because we had an ample amount of time to work on this essay. The writing process really helped with the essay as well. When we share in class it is great feedback and helps us learn how to improve on the next essay. The essay is a great tool we can use for future reference!

    3. I also prepared the essay prior to the test date. However, I think to challenge my mind under pressure, I should write the essay on the actual date of the test. It's always great to challenge your mind in more ways than one. I want no loose ends, especially in my journey to become a better writer.

Today's activities went well! We just discussed our essay and what we learned from writing it. Then we were able to write on the class blog! I liked how we were able to end early.

    2. I strongly agree that the three stages of the writing process helped greatly in test#1 and also will be beneficial in our future writings. Being given the option of a take home essay for a test was actually an advantage as well as a convinience to us. Also, it gave us time to think through every step we take and make as many revisions we needed to in order to create the best writing we can.

  3. My thoughts on test #1 are I think that taking the test at home is kind of hard due to the distractions around me. Also I think it is beneficial for me because I have more time doing the test in advance than at class. I was not prepared for the test because of the confusion on what the test is on and what should I write about. In addition, the strategy that I only did in order to get me out of the confusion is that I emailed Dr.Rivera to ensure what is the test about. Furthermore, today's activities involves the presentation on the topic and thesis statement on the descriptive essay and what I learned from writing my essay. I say that I did a good job on it but I blanked out.

    1. I agree, I would also have the same situation like yours if I also did the take home test. It's hard but it save time for us, because we also have many home works and class works to do as well.

    2. My thought exactly when I chose the in-class test instead of the take home. I thought that I would have more distractions at home and it wouldn't work out at all but after today's class I'm starting to think it's better to have more time than to have limited time. With more time, even when you do have distractions you, there are many opportunities for you to fix your errors.

    3. I could totally relate with you! I admit that it took me days before actually starting with the essay. But in the end, writing essays at home really gives us time to think about what we want to say.

    4. I could relate to your concerns of take home essay. Not only it took me almost forever to finish it due to distractions, having beem given a long time until it's due gave room for procrastination. But, on the other hand, I'm glad that we were given that option because if were to do it on class, I would have totally freaked out since i'm never good at doing things under pressure.

  4. I enjoyed test #1 it help me improve my essay skills and speaking up even when I am shy. I will remember the three steps in the essay and always follow it for the next test. Curiosity is growing every time I learn a new subject. My classmate did well on their part. I'm still improving in my writing and slowly getting their day by day basis. I did many speech in the past, but this will help me in the future preference.
Thank-you Dr Rivera for teaching us.

    1. I agree with you, the activity that we did in the beginning helped us to improve our writing skills and it also helped us to learn how to speak up in front of people. But too bad for me I didn't get the chance to speak due the fact that I didn't do the take home test.

    2. I agree with you! The three steps is really a great guide in writing any essays, especially when you get stuck in thinking of ideas to write. At first, I thought we were just supposed to pass our essays and leave, but I was surprised that we had to present our topic and thesis. I'm also pretty shy, but I think that speaking up is always a good thing to get the hang off, to prepare for future public speaking tasks.

  5. My thoughts on test #1 was that it was great! The three stages that we used as tools to improve our writing skills was helpful. It helped put our paper in a good structure form as well as making it organized. I wish that I could have taken advantage of doing the take home test, it would made me feel well prepared and confident on doing great on the test. Other than that, today was pretty good. Thank you Dr.Rivera.

    1. I agree the three stages did really helped us a lot in our writing. I also wish that I do the take home test because maybe my essay will be a little bit understandable and clear than the one I did in class.

    2. I agree, I think that if I were to do a take home test I would have been more confident when Dr. Rivera had asked how I did. The in-class test made me rush and miss a couple of supporting details that I suddenly thought of at the end of the essay. Next time around maybe doing a take home test wouldn't be bad at all.

    1. I agree with today's activity of writing an in-class essay I learned how to write an essay within 45 minutes. Another important part of writing is time management because I am almost certain we're going to be needing this later on in life such as later careers or as we continue our education. Since we had to do the steps and write the paper within the 45 minutes I felt intimidated but that was a challenge and an opportunity to learn when I think about this morning.

    2. Good job in being prepared for our test! I didn't think about how beneficial writing the essay in class would have been. I'm sure you did your best and your grade will reflect that!

  8. My thoughts on today's test #1 was that it was good yet I could have done better in describing my topic, because of the time limit I somewhat rushed myself into finishing the essay that I felt I might have left out a few supporting details that could have strengthened my essay. Something I could do to make myself do well on the next test would be to pick a topic that I am a 100% certain about.

    1. I also think that I left out a lot of supporting details, but I'm sure you did good!

    2. Taking the test in class does give you a limited amount of time to take it. Picking a topic that you know a lot about would be a good choice for the next test.

    3. It's inevitable to have a sense of inadequacy after finishing anything requiring excessive work especially in something as subjective as writing. What's done is done and look towards the future. The priority towards every course is progress, so as long as you're progressing in becoming a better writer, you are doing you're job as a good student.

  9. Taking test #1 was very interesting. I was sort of prepared for the descriptive essay test, but I was a little nervous. I wanted to take the test in class, so I could see how it was like and also to challenge myself as a person. To prepare myself for the next essay test, I will practice more on the 3 stages of writing and to be more confident next time.

    1. This is a really great idea! I could agree that time-limited essays are really tough, that was also the reason why I chose to do the take home essay. But it is really interesting how you challenged yourself to go on with it.

    2. So true. I saw the in-class essay as a time to challenge myself. I have never been good in composing well written essays within a time limit. The in-class essay was a great opportunity to see if I could overcome this problem and hopefully I see some progress.

    3. I agree, I will also practice more on the three stages of writing in order to be more confident next time. I like how you challenged yourself on doing the in class test instead of the take home. I was also nervous on doing the take home descriptive essay because I did not know what topic to write on especially when it was the time to present in class.

    4. Today's test was indeed interesting. It's normal to be nervous and it's good to challenge yourself once in a while to see what you're capable of doing. I wasn't as tough to take the in class exam because I doubt that I could create such composition in a certain time period. I believe that quality essay must take time to write. That's a good idea that you should practice the three stages of writing, I might do it too since i need to improve my writing strategies.

    8. I actually had trouble choosing if I wanted to take the test in class or not. They both have their own benefits, but more time equals better grade so I decided to do the essay at home. It's interesting how so many people decided to take the test in class so I commend your efforts in challenging yourselves. There is no progress without trial and you guys illustrate examples of good writers.

  10. My thoughts on test #1 is that it was a bit challenging to accomplish writing the essay, but because of a wide time span given, the task was made bearable and possible. The strategies I included and practiced in the process are the three stages of writing that we talked about in the previous class discussions. If I were to change something in order to make my essay better and well revised, it would be procrastinating and waiting until the last minute. I could have finished it a little early, but because of writers block, other school work and activities, I was hindered to better my writing. Today's class discussion was brief, yet interesting because we got to know each others thoughts about our choice of topic and what did each other choose to write about.

    3. I agree, test one was challenging but the extra time we were given really helped. This test helped us understand the writing process a lot more and gave us a better understanding of how to use it. Class also gave us the opportunity to understand the thoughts of our classmates and hear their opinions on certain things.

I knew what was expected of me and I knew how to execute the essay very easily. By using the writing process, I was sure that I was prepared for my test.Today's activity was effective because we all got to share what we learned from writing our essay. 12. I personally think that I was well prepared for this particular test. Besides the fact that we had previously learned about the important points in writing a descriptive essay, we also had the ample amount of time to thoroughly think about our essay. What I really like is that we were given a very long time to think, write and revise our essay, which allowed us time to properly incorporate our previous lesson. For me, I really took my time to think about what I wanted to say before finalizing my paper. Thanks to the long weekend, I had the ample amount of time to do multiple revisions that helped improve my essay greatly.

  14. When the first test was given as a take home test or in class exam, I felt a subtle joy because in my mind the work would be less burdensome and less time constraining. However, writing a descriptive essay is a challenging task because it requires the usage of different elements such as metaphors, alliteration, simile, and the right adjectives. In my opinion, the most challenging part of writing a descriptive essay is choosing the right words for a sentence. Constructing an elegant descriptive essay require the usage of vivid language and relevance.

You wanted to ensure you used the best possible option to express your idea.

  15. I was somewhat prepared for the test. I utilized the three stages of the the writing process for the essay. Although, I did it all in one day so it could have seen a lot more revisions. What I need to do next time is to allow several days of writing and rewriting to produce a better essay. We did not go too much in depth in presenting our essays, but it was informative nonetheless. We learned things along the way in writing our final essays.

  16. I actually learned a lot in taking Test #1. It showed me how effective the writing process can be in brainstorming and organizing my essay. Prior to this test, I have never considered the writing process as an effective technique, but to my surprise, it was more than useful. The use of the writing process will most indefinitely broaden the way I write essays! Also, in writing this essay, I actually found a new perspective on my topic that I had never known before. It's amazing how writing an essay sparks new thoughts and ideas about subjects never thought of before.
